UK Correspondent: Barrister Nazir Ahmed met Hon. Seedy SK Njie, Deputy Speaker of The Gambia’s National Assembly, during a visit to the parliament on September 16, according to a correspondent report.

The National Assembly’s official website lists Njie as Deputy Speaker and states that the Deputy Speaker presides in the Speaker’s absence. The correspondent reported that Njie was serving as acting speaker during the visit.

Ahmed, a former deputy speaker of the London Borough of Newham and chairman of Iqra International, discussed the organisation’s charitable work in The Gambia and prospects for expanding activities in other African countries. According to the report, Njie welcomed the visitor and expressed support for charitable initiatives.

During the meeting, Ahmed also thanked The Gambia for its role in bringing a case against Myanmar before the International Court of Justice over allegations of genocide against the Rohingya.

Later, National Assembly member Modou Lamin B. Bah, identified in the report as head of Iqra International’s Gambia team, showed Ahmed around the parliament. Ahmed subsequently observed a parliamentary sitting as a guest.

The correspondent said Speaker Fabakary Tombong Jatta was away on official travel, with Njie carrying out the Speaker’s duties in his absence.
