A parliamentary committee has recommended modernising Bangladesh’s silk sector and improving access to yarn, dyes and other raw materials for small-scale weavers. The recommendations were made at the first meeting of the parliamentary standing committee on the Ministry of Textiles and Jute on October 24.
According to a Parliament Secretariat statement, the committee called for greater mechanisation of operations under the Bangladesh Sericulture Development Board. It also proposed facilitating supplies through weavers’ associations or dealers, with local lawmakers helping to address bottlenecks.
The panel additionally called for transparency and accountability in public tenders, recommending that eligible suppliers have fair opportunities rather than contracts repeatedly going to the same institutions.
