Japan is reportedly preparing to arrange 1 trillion yen, or about $6.36 billion, in private-sector investment in Bangladesh over five years, Reuters reported on October 22, citing Japan’s Nikkei newspaper.
The report said Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi was expected to host Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for a summit later this month, with a possible joint statement outlining the investment plan.
Automobile and other manufacturing industries, as well as energy infrastructure, were mentioned as potential areas of investment. The Bangladesh Special Economic Zone, being developed with partners including Sumitomo Corporation, could also feature in the initiative.
Reuters said it could not immediately verify Nikkei’s report independently. The figures therefore describe a reported proposal, not a confirmed disbursement or completed investment agreement.
