Bangladesh and Japan agreed on October 27 to broaden their Bay of Bengal Industrial Growth Belt initiative into a framework called ‘BIG-B for Shared Prosperity’, following summit talks between Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in Tokyo.
The expanded framework seeks to link energy facilities, deep-sea ports, industrial zones, digital infrastructure and transport networks. The Matarbari–Maheshkhali area, anchored by Matarbari Deep-Sea Port, is envisaged as an integrated logistics, energy and industrial hub.
The leaders identified connectivity, resilience against natural disasters and geopolitical shocks, public-private partnerships, and cooperation for regional stability as priorities. The announcement sets out a strategic direction; individual projects and investments will still depend on subsequent implementation decisions.
