Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation plans to train 68,000 drivers through two programmes intended to improve road safety, strengthen professional skills and expand employment opportunities at home and abroad.
A World Bank-financed road safety project covers 60,000 participants: 40,000 new professional drivers and refresher training for 20,000 existing drivers. A separate Asian Development Bank-supported skills programme aims to train another 8,000 new drivers, including skills relevant to overseas work.
The programmes include defensive driving, vehicle maintenance, basic fault diagnosis and, for some trainees, English and Arabic communication. BRTC’s four training institutes and 23 training centres are expected to deliver the training. The figures represent planned programme coverage rather than the number already trained.
