Bangladesh aims to develop Sylhet into a major centre for vegetable production and exports, Commerce, Industries and Textiles and Jute Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir said at an agricultural equipment distribution event in Sylhet Sadar on October 27.
The proposed approach includes planned year-round cultivation, improved irrigation and drainage, agricultural mechanisation, consistent product quality, packaging and better cold-storage facilities. The minister said steps were being considered to establish a packaging house and cold-storage facilities near Sylhet airport.
He identified potential demand among Bangladeshi communities in the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States and Italy. These are government plans and possible markets, not evidence that new export contracts or production targets have already been achieved.
