A nurse was killed and another health worker seriously injured while responding to an Ebola alert in Bafwasende, in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo’s Tshopo province, the World Health Organization reported on Monday, October 26.
The attack occurred on Saturday. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and the agency’s Africa regional leadership condemned the violence and called for protection of frontline health personnel.
Authorities had not publicly identified the attackers or established a motive when the incident was reported. WHO warned that fear, misinformation and attacks on response teams can impede efforts to control disease outbreaks.
