The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution condemning the United States’ economic embargo on Cuba for the 34th consecutive year on October 28. The vote was 130 in favour, 17 against and 25 abstentions.
The resolution is nonbinding, but reflects governments’ positions. Support was lower than in previous years, with more countries opposing or abstaining. The US government defended its policy, while Cuba’s government criticised the economic and humanitarian consequences of the embargo.
The vote took place amid shortages and economic strain in Cuba. The resolution does not itself repeal US sanctions; any change to those measures depends on decisions under US law and policy.
