Bangladesh Bank expects visible improvement in the financial condition of the banking sector by March or April 2027 if its reform programme progresses as planned, Deputy Governor Md Habibur Rahman said at a banking conference on October 28.

He identified non-performing loans, asset-quality reviews, capital shortfalls, corporate governance and risk management as priorities. According to figures he presented, the sector’s non-performing loan ratio has fallen from 36% in December 2025 to 31%. Asset-quality reviews have been completed at 15 banks, he said.

The central bank is also pursuing mechanisms to resolve distressed banks and strengthen financial oversight. The projected improvement is an official expectation, not an independently established future outcome.
