Editorial: Bangladesh’s garment wage dispute is a test of how a major export industry shares the value created by its workers. A revised pay structure is expected from December, but the amount of any increase has yet to be settled. That uncertainty should be addressed through a transparent process, with a published timetable and clear evidence behind the final recommendation.

Workers have demanded a Tk 30,000 monthly minimum, compared with Tk 12,500 today. Employers cite energy costs, international competition and thin margins. Both realities deserve serious examination. The wage board should publish how it weighs food, housing, transport and healthcare costs against productivity, factory finances and export prices.

International buyers also have a role. Purchasing practices that continually squeeze supplier prices make decent wages harder to sustain. Manufacturers, unions, government and brands should be expected to explain their commitments publicly.

A credible settlement should include enforceable payment dates, mechanisms for complaints and safeguards against retaliation. Bangladesh can protect both workers’ dignity and its export reputation through fair negotiations and measurable compliance.
