Business Desk: Bangladesh’s home minister, Salahuddin Ahmed, met representatives of garment factory owners at the Secretariat on November 2 amid protests over wages in several industrial areas. The government says it is seeking dialogue to restore normal operations.
According to BSS, workers have demanded a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000 during demonstrations in Dhaka, Gazipur, Savar, Ashulia and Tangail. The existing minimum wage is Tk 12,500. A six-member wage board has been formed to review the pay structure.
Reports of road blockades and clashes have accompanied the unrest. Officials have also made allegations of political interference, but those claims should be treated as allegations rather than established findings. A durable resolution will require credible wage negotiations, protection of peaceful protest and safe operation of factories.
