National Desk: Bangladesh plans to send advance weather forecasts to farmers registered under its Farmer Card programme. Routine alerts would arrive by SMS every six hours, with more frequent warnings during severe weather and disasters, according to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) on November 2.
The weather service is one of ten planned benefits associated with the programme, alongside agricultural input support, low-interest credit, irrigation and crop insurance. The government has set a four-year target to reach approximately 24 million farmers.
Timely forecasts could help farmers decide when to plant, irrigate and harvest, particularly as extreme weather disrupts production. The announced system is a planned service, however, and should not be confused with universal nationwide delivery already being in place.
