The UN Security Council failed to agree on renewing its Western Sahara mission, MINURSO, on October 30 after Russia vetoed a US-drafted resolution and a rival Russian proposal did not secure sufficient votes, Reuters reported.
The existing mandate runs through October 31. Without a new Council decision, the mission’s future monitoring and de-escalation role would face uncertainty.
The dispute concerns competing approaches to Western Sahara’s political status. Morocco backs an autonomy proposal, while the Polisario Front calls for self-determination. The failure of these drafts does not by itself establish that the mission has already shut down.
