Bangladesh has launched an initiative to recruit 25,000 midwives to strengthen women’s healthcare and expand services in underserved communities, Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain said on October 30.
Speaking at an event in Monohardi, Narsingdi, the minister said midwives could help raise awareness of breast and cervical cancers, support early detection and offer counselling, particularly in remote areas. He also described plans for awareness programmes involving female students and teachers.
The announcement concerns a proposed recruitment initiative. It does not mean that 25,000 midwives have already been hired; implementation details and a recruitment timetable have not yet been announced in the cited statement.
