Delegates from nearly 200 countries reached agreements at the COP17 United Nations biodiversity summit in Yerevan, Armenia, after negotiations extended beyond the scheduled conclusion on October 30.
The summit aimed to accelerate implementation of the global commitment to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030. Earlier UN assessments warned that progress was insufficient on conservation of 30% of land and ocean areas, pollution controls and financing for nature protection.
Although several texts were adopted, participants and observers expressed disappointment about limited movement on contentious issues. The practical impact will depend on national implementation and financing rather than the announcements alone.
