Bangladesh is prioritising skills training and access to non-traditional overseas labour markets as part of its employment strategy, according to information released by the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment on 30 October.
The government has set a target of sending 10 million skilled workers abroad over five years. Officials say 104 technical training centres are offering 55 types of courses, including information technology, nursing, caregiving, driving and mechanical and electrical trades. Language training in Japanese, Korean, German and Arabic is also being emphasised.
The plan includes lowering recruitment costs, curbing unauthorised intermediaries and improving legal protection for migrants. Its success will depend on recognised qualifications, legitimate employer demand, transparent recruitment and enforceable worker safeguards.
