Sammilito Islami Bank PLC has begun repaying depositors six months after five troubled Islamic banks were merged, marking an early development in Bangladesh’s ongoing banking-sector restructuring.
The bank is continuing regular operations while also attracting new deposits, according to a recent report. The development is being watched as a test of whether consolidation can restore confidence in institutions that had faced severe liquidity and governance problems.
The broader reform effort is aimed at improving stability, depositor protection and accountability across the banking system.
