According to ICC regulations, the host country’s name must be displayed under the logo on the jerseys of all participating teams in a tournament. Following this rule, the jerseys of all teams in the Champions Trophy will feature the name “Pakistan.” However, initially, BCCI took a stance against including “Pakistan” on India’s jersey.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) objected to this and sought ICC’s intervention. A PCB official commented, “BCCI is bringing politics into cricket. They refused to play in Pakistan and are unwilling to send their captain for the opening ceremony. Now, they don’t even want to feature the host country’s name on their jersey. We hope ICC will not approve such a reckless decision.”
Following PCB’s complaint and ICC’s intervention, BCCI revised its position. BCCI’s new secretary, Devajit Saikia, confirmed that India’s jersey would comply with ICC’s rules, including featuring the host country’s name. He stated, “We will follow ICC guidelines in designing the jersey.”
However, while the jersey issue has been resolved, BCCI has yet to decide whether Indian captain Rohit Sharma will attend the Champions Trophy’s opening ceremony in Pakistan. The tournament is scheduled to begin in Karachi on February 19, with the trophy unveiling taking place a day earlier as per ICC tradition, which requires all team captains to participate.
It’s worth noting that India has not sent its cricket team to Pakistan for any bilateral series or tournaments since 2008. This year’s Champions Trophy is being held in a hybrid model, where India will play its matches in the UAE instead of Pakistan.
