Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain today announced that the names of 13 public universities previously named after former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her family members have been changed by the interim government.

Most of these institutions will now bear the names of the districts where they are located.

Asif Mahmud, also adviser to the Ministry of Labour and Employment and the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, and Co-operatives, confirmed the decision through his verified Facebook page.

However, no official notification has yet been issued by the Ministry of Education.

According to the adviser’s post, 13 out of 55 public universities have been renamed.

Sheikh Hasina University in Netrakona is now called Netrakona University, and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University in Kishoreganj is called Kishoreganj University.

Similarly, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University in Naogaon has been renamed to Naogaon University, while Mujibnagar University in Meherpur will be called Meherpur University from now on.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University in Gazipur is now Gazipur Agricultural University, and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University in Shariatpur is now Shariatpur Agricultural University.

Bangladesh Digital University is the new name for Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Digital University in Gazipur, and Jamalpur University of Science and Technology is the new name for Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Science and Technology University in Jamalpur.

Science and technology universities named after Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Pirojpur, Narayanganj, and Gopalganj will also have their names changed to include the respective district’s name.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University in Chattogram will now be named Maritime University Bangladesh, and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Aviation and Aerospace University in Gazipur will be called Aviation and Aerospace University Bangladesh.
