Duolingo, the language-learning platform, has reported a significant increase in users, with a 216% surge in Americans learning Mandarin compared to the same period last year.

The growth comes as over 700,000 users in the United States turn to Chinese-language social app RedNote amidst concerns of a potential TikTok ban.

On their verified account in X, Duolingo posted, “We’ve seen a ~216% growth in new Chinese (Mandarin) learners in the US compared to this time last year.” Earlier on 14 January, indicating the switch of platforms by TikTok users, Duolingo posted saying, “oh so NOW you’re learning mandarin.”

The possible prohibition of TikTok has made users explore alternative platforms, with RedNote emerging as a popular option. Duolingo appears to be benefiting from the trend, positioning itself as a tool for users seeking to navigate the Mandarin-language app.
