Bangladesh’s measles outbreak remains a major public-health concern, with eight more deaths reported among people showing suspected measles symptoms in the latest 24-hour period. Health authorities also confirmed 81 new infections, while 1,239 people sought hospital treatment with symptoms.
According to government figures cited from the Directorate General of Health Services, data have been published since March 15. Over that period, 100 people have died after confirmed measles diagnoses and another 944 have died with suspected symptoms, taking the combined toll to 1,044. The number of suspected cases has passed 175,000.
Bangladesh launched an emergency measles-rubella vaccination response earlier this year with support from UNICEF, the World Health Organization and Gavi. UNICEF has reported that 18.5 million children were reached by the emergency campaign, while warning that accumulated immunity gaps mean stronger routine immunisation and case management remain necessary.
Health partners continue to emphasise identifying children who missed routine doses, maintaining vaccination coverage and ensuring timely treatment for severe cases.
